A bush bunker of last resort
For a suburb only 25 kilometres north-east of Melbourne’s city centre, Warrandyte is unusually bushfire-prone, and Dick Davies is taking no risks.
The suburb and its surrounding region contain vast grassy areas and a hilly topography.
The area was ravaged by 1939’s infamous Black Friday fires, and several homes were lost as recently as 2014.
The 73-year-old Davies has put computers, clothing and other valuables in his bushfire bunker and is preparing to wait out today’s heat with his children in Carlton North.
