“I would like to inform you that I have tested positive for COVID-19,” Barnier wrote on Twitter this morning.

“I am doing well and in good spirits. I am following all the necessary instructions, as is my team. For all those affected already, and for all those currently in isolation, we will get through this together.”

But Barnier’s diagnosis underlines the very serious prospect that the pandemic may completely swamp both the British and EU putting their trade talks in jeopardy.

Boris Johnson was asked about this yesterday and said the issue was not even being discussed in Downing Street, such was the government’s focus on handling the health crisis.
