A man will face court on Thursday charged with the murder of another man in Redfern more than 20 years ago after he went to Redfern Police Station on Wednesday.

Robert McPherson, 38, was walking along James Street in Redfern with a friend about 9.20pm on January 27, 1998, when they were allegedly attacked by a group of at least six men who were armed with a chain, stick, baseball bat, and a knife.

Mr McPherson was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital where he later died.

About 7am on Wednesday, a 41-year-old man went to Redfern Police Station, where he was later arrested and charged with murder.

Police also charged him over the 2002 armed robbery of a bank on Botany Bay Road in Botany.

The man was refused bail and will appear at Central Local Court on Thursday.
