Perth man charged with murder over death of baby girl29th March 2021
A 30-year-old Girrawheen man has been charged with murder over the death of a baby girl.
Three-month-old Elyssia Ahrens died on March 14, two days after being hospitalised with brain injuries stemming from an incident at a Girrawheen home.
Zach Meier – who is not the father of the child – fronted Perth Magistrates Court on Monday, where his original charge of grievous bodily harm was upgraded to murder.
His relationship to the child is not yet known, however the incident occurred on his birthday.
Facebook posts showed the baby’s father, Robert Ahrens, describing his daughter as “perfect” and “adorable”.
“I honestly can’t help it but smile every time I’ve looked at her, or even a picture of her,” he said shortly after she was born.
Loved ones have rallied around Elyssia’s parents since the tragedy, raising more than $5000 for her funeral.
“Taken from them at such a precious young age, we are all in absolute shock and disbelief that such a tragedy has taken place,” one friend wrote.
“Tonight a beautiful precious angel gets her wings … fly high princess Elyssia, we will miss you so much.”
