Japan’s government raised its travel warning and urged the Japanese against overseas trips, one day after it was confirmed the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games would be staged in 2021 instead.
The coronavirus has infected 1271 people in Japan with 44 deaths linked to the virus, the country’s public broadcaster NHK said.
Tokyo’s Governor Yuriko Koike said the city’s residents should avoid all non-essential outings until April 12 and work from home where possible.
“To avoid an overshoot in infections, the cooperation of Tokyo residents is critical. I ask you to act with a sense of crisis,” Koike said.
Koike warned that a lockdown of the capital was possible if it saw an explosive rise in cases but said if the public exercised restraint, one would not be necessary.
