South Yarra church assault: Police release CCTV footage

Police have released footage of a man they want to speak to in relation to the vicious assault of an elderly woman in South Yarra on Saturday morning.

The 78-year-old woman was left with serious injuries after she was attacked while opening a church on Barry Street about 6.15am.

Her daughter-in-law, Erin Katsavos, told 3AW radio the woman had been left with a fractured pelvis, broken wrist and bleeding on her brain in two places.

Police believe a male assaulted the woman before stealing her shopping trolley containing personal items.

The trolley was later found in a nearby street with the personal items still inside.

Investigators have released images and CCTV footage of a man they believe may be able to assist with their inquiries.

Police described him as a thinly built Caucasian, with dark-coloured hair and moustache. He was wearing a brown T-shirt and dark-coloured pants.
