In Sydney, Caitlin Fitzsimmons writes that Belmore Park has emptied out, signalling the end of the city’s protest.

Jen, 50, and Vlad, 21, are sitting on the steps across Hay Street from Belmore Park.

Jen teaches introduction to criminal justice at a university and Vlad is a student.

“I’m here to make sure no kiddies are strip-searched and to make sure they know their rights,” Jen said.

“They get intimidated by these idiots [police] and start babbling. We’re just down here watching police and handing out sanitiser.”

Jen said the protest had gone well but could have turned ugly if the police had decided to start arresting people.

“They’ve been very well behaved today,” she said.

“I’m quite impressed with how everyone has kept their heads.” She said she was referring to both police and protesters.”
